Under the Child Support (Assessment) Act, the primary carer of the child or children can make a claim for child support from the other parent.
The Child Support Agency is responsible for administering your child support arrangements, and assessing the amount of support which should be provided. The decision is based on each parent’s income, the number of children and their living arrangements for example whether you have shared custody or sole custody of the children.
There is an 8 step process involved in calculating the basic amount payable by a parent. By entering both your and the other parent’s financial information into the child support online estimator you are able to calculate an estimate of what child support and family assistance payments are likely to be under the formula.
If either parent wishes to object to the assessed amount, you can lodge an Objection form. The Child Support Agency will then determine your objection and may vary the assessed amount.
