Separation and family law disputes are stressful, but the more you do to prepare yourself and understand the process the less daunting it will be. Below are some commonly used Family Law sites that will help to empower you in your Family Law journey.

The Family Law Process

  • Family Court YouTube Channel helps you to prepare for court, or explain certain aspects of the Family Law process to your children.
  • Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia provides useful information and resources about your Family Law matter, particularly with regards to assisting kids and young people navigate the process. The site provides links to the Sesame Street Divorce App which may assist you in best preparing young children for what they may experience whilst you and your partner separate.
  • Federal Circuit Court YouTube Channel This section provides links to court and Family Law related information that has been developed for different age groups.
  • Family Law Term Finder what is “Shared Parental Responsibility”?… no-nonsense explanations for commonly used terms in Family Law (and there are a lot of them!)

D.I.Y. Child Support and Parenting Services

  • Department of Human Services Child Support Estimator do you know how much child support you are entitled to receive? Find out here.
  • Family Relationships Australia Resource central! The Relationships Australia site allows families to find out about a range of services that can assist them to manage relationship issues, including agreeing on appropriate arrangements for children after parents separate.

Are you or a loved one experiencing Domestic Violence?

  • 1800Respect Are you experiencing sexual assault or domestic violence? 1800Respect provides a 24/7 national counselling helpline, information and support.
  • Download the Daisy App Who is Daisy? Violence against women is unacceptable. Daisy is a free a app that connects women around Australia to services.
  • NSW Domestic Violence Line If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can ring the Domestic Violence Line on 1800 656 463 for help or visit their site.

Family Law Changes from 6 May 2024

The Family Law Amendment Act 2023 comes into affect from 6 May 2024 and affects parenting matters. We have summarised these changes on our social media, however click on one of the below fact sheets to learn more. ⁠

Family Wizard App

We often recommend the Family Wizard App as a option for parents to communicate in a more respectful place. This means no text messages or emails, and the app places an emoji in place of swear words. Here are some helpful articles from the app with some good tips on coparenting.

    New rental laws are now in place, giving tenants greater protections. ⁠The new rules include:⁠
    ⁠
    🐶A landlord can only end a lease for certain reasons, such as the property is being sold or they`re moving in themselves.⁠
    ⁠
    😺Longer notice periods for tenants in fixed leases so tenants get more time to find a new home.⁠
    ⁠
    🦜Landlords can only refuse a request to keep a pet for certain reasons. A response must be given within 21 days or the request is automatically approved. Tenants can`t be charged extra rent or bond.

    ⁠
    This change was implemented as part of the Courts’ continuous efforts to strengthen and ensure security and functionality of the systems. To re-access, legal practitioners will need to make a request to the Court and meet a number of requirements. ⁠
    ⁠
    This change will not impact the parties, parties to proceedings will continue to have ongoing access to their file.⁠

Doing this sooner rather than later can assist you both agreeing to a financial settlement more quickly.⁠
